Her name was Marie-Ange Prud'homme, and the length of her name was matched only by the long voyage that had taken her by ship to New France among a hundred other Filles du Roy (King's Daughters). Marie-Ange was strikingly different from the rest, rather thin and lacking the physique that made the colonists exclaim, "Built for hard work." It was her exceptional skill as a spinner and her determination to settle on virgin land that had earned her a place on the ship. Born into a family of farmers raising Nubian goats in Haute-Savoie, she secretly dreamed of starting her own goat farm in her adopted land. Fortunately for her, a man known as "Good Jean" noticed her and took her as his wife.
Her dream of owning a farm took a different turn when her husband introduced her to neighboring farmers who eagerly brought her flax fiber so she could weave bags for transporting food. Her wages consisted of exchanging empty bags for full ones. And good old Jean seemed happy to see the bags of carrots, potatoes, and turnips piling up—precious foodstuffs in those harsh winters.
One night, she woke with a start, having thought she heard little bells. Were they the ones around the necks of the goats she dreamed of owning? Exhausted, she went back to sleep. At dawn, as she did every Thursday, she went to the market where she sold her handmade goods. That morning, a man gave her four bags of goods instead of three, explaining that the quality of the spinning justified the extra. Back at her cabin, she discovered that one of the bags contained beautiful fresh almonds. Without a second thought, Marie-Ange devoured handfuls and handfuls of almonds, the taste transporting her back to her mother's kitchen and the smell of warm brioches. Marie was in heaven!
The following night, she heard the sound of bells again. As soon as she got out of bed, her sweet tooth drew her back to her bag of almonds. Imagine her surprise when she discovered they had transformed into shiny coins! And so, good Jean and Marie-Ange became the happy owners of a herd of goats, and they lived in good health thanks to the countless benefits of goat's milk.
