Young Félix Lumignon grew up in the small village of Caucade, perched between the sea and the mountains. It was there that the Nice orange, renowned for its abundant and fragrant juice, was cultivated. An only child, his favorite pastime was fishing at the village quay. Under the warm Provençal sun, time seemed to pass so slowly; luckily, he always carried his colored pencils. As time went on, what began as spontaneous sketches transformed into increasingly refined drawings.
At the age of 12, Félix's grandfather, seeing how diligent the young boy was with his drawing, decided to give him an easel. Since his grandfather had poor eyesight, he made him a large easel, which proved cumbersome to carry to the dock. So Félix got into the habit of painting his canvases, now large-format, in the courtyard of his mother Adrienne's pastry shop. Settled in the shade of the old cypress trees, he would wait for the pastry chef to prepare a batch of soft vanilla cakes, and as soon as the sweet, delicate aroma filled the courtyard, he would begin to work, inspired by an angelic breeze. Customers sometimes stopped for hours to admire the artist at work. A style was emerging before their very eyes.
One day, a passing customer took an interest in his work. This man, Mr. Chanteduc, owner of an art gallery in Nice, offered to lend the budding artist some of his canvases for public display. The gallery owner's intuition proved correct; to young Lumignon's great surprise, the paintings were a resounding success.
Years later, a painting by Lumignon found its way into the possession of a collector in the village of Eastman. As soon as Sébastien, the village soap maker, saw it, he was struck by the composition of green and orange against a white background and was captivated by its organic beauty.
